Background:

Large and popular school founded in early 1960s in attractive setting in rural village of Wingerworth, three miles south of Chesterfield, with views of Derbyshire Peak National Park. Four new brick classrooms and an entrance hall were opened in 1999 to replace three wooden rooms. Broad and balanced curriculum focuses on prime importance of pupils acquiring basic skills; well-equipped with ICT resources. Music is 'a strength': woodwind, brass, strings and electronic keyboard; two school orchestras meet weekly - one for strings, one for woodwind and brass. School teams play soccer, netball, hockey and rounders and pupils compete in District swimming and athletic tournaments. Older children have weekly swimming lessons. The school choir regularly participates in district music festival. Active parent-teacher association raises funds to provide the school with new facilities and equipment. Children are involved in a charity appeal each year. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school, until 6pm. DfES achievement award (2003). Ethos: 'A caring ethos where expectations for behaviour and academic achievement are high. The children enjoy coming to school, feeling safe and secure'.
