Background:

New Mills School and Sixth Form Centre is a non-selective school in Derbyshire local educationauthority. At the heart of the school is an impressive, solid stone quadrangle, dating from 1912, enclosing an attractive domed building which was once the school's central assembly hall and now houses a modern library. In September 2001 the school's lower site was closed and all students moved to the current Church lane buildings. Mathematics is taught in its new purpose-built six classroom block opened in 2001 when the school's split sites were amalgamated and enjoys excellent resources and facilities. Technology in the school is expanding with the current creation of two brand new, purpose designed food technology workshops and two refurbished and redesigned resistant material workshops. Separate building with six laboratories for science, all recently refurbished and refitted and two additional demonstration and mini laboratories added in 2001. Modern languages and music moved into a new six classroom block and enjoys purpose-built facilities, including a brand new suite with rehearsal/practice rooms, a recording studio and sound-proofed practical rooms. In 2002 the school successfully applied for the School Curriculum award, and in 2003 the school was granted Investor in People status. The school has an excellent record in sport and some notable successes, both at individual and team level, have been achieved over the years. Many opportunities exist for students to develop their interests or engage in new ones. Exchange visits are well established with towns in Germany and France and the school is always looking at new ways to expand these cultural experiences. The school aims to provide a supportive and caring environment.
