Background:

Has grown in size and reputation since opened in 1957, originally as small county grammar. Became comprehensive in 1976; now a foundation school. Located in grounds of Duffield Hall in dormitory village of Duffield, four miles north of Derby. Significant building programme from September 2003 to improve general classroom provision, and to enhance sixth-form and science facilities. Performs well across entire curriculum. Has county and national representatives in sport and music, both of which described as strong and successful; under-16 hockey national champions in 2005. Also 'unusually strong' religious studies department and strong drama department. Extra-curricular activities include writers' club, debating society, inter-house drama, and spoken English. Links with France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, United States, China and Brazil. Raises about £5,000 a year for charities. Ecclesbourne Foundation created in 2002 to enhance further education of students. Specialist technology college status from 2001. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place.
