Background:
Set in the northern suburbs of Derby, the school looks over fields and across Vicar Wood valley, Kedleston Hall and its expansive estates. The 'good maintenance of the school and its site is a priority' and facilities include a library and information centre, language bases, information technology and computer suites, purpose-built technology block, science laboratory suite, art and design studios, humanities base, creative and performing arts suite, music suite and media studio, and a swimming pool. It has a 'strong' tradition in art, music and drama and organises annual art exhibitions and drama productions. There is a self contained music school which is supported outside normal school hours. There is also an adult community programme, in addition to youth provision and extensive sports programmes. The school experiences 'city, county and national success' at sport. 'Woodlands is a place of hard work and high academic achievement, and equally importantly, a place where people matter and learn respect for each other'.
