Background:

Opened in 1969 in 'pleasant' grounds on the Ridings, Redhill Primary serves the village of Ockbrook, about five miles from Derby. Facilities include seven 'large' classrooms, a 'modern' study centre, library and hall in addition to a new administration block. The school also offers three hard play areas, a sports field, wildlife area and a pond used by pupils as part of science and environmental studies lessons. It is oversubscribed, receiving three applicants for every two places, and children are organised into seven year groups of 30 to 32 per class. The school believes that 'experiences in the performing arts are important in providing a rounded education'. It therefore places an emphasis on music and provides opportunities for children to become involved in drama and musical presentations. Children are offered a 'wide variety' of after-school clubs including chess, computers, nature, drama, recorders, orchestra, swing band, soccer, netball, cricket, rounders, gymnastics and French. There are 'very good relationships' between staff, pupils, parents and governors. Redhill is proud to have become a Beacon school in 1998, and is 'proud of our reputation as a school where academic achievement and broader learning experiences are highly valued'.
