Founded in 1865, as a church school in the centre of Chesterfield; moved in 1980 to new buildings in landscaped grounds on greenfield site a couple of miles outside the town centre; designed on village principle, with separate blocks for different subjects; serves wide catchment area in northeast Derbyshire. Specialist language college status from 1997. In addition to the national curriculum, the school offers French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese. Strong reputation for academic excellence and traditional values, as well as music and art activities. Public speaking, debating and Young Enterprise have high profiles. Wide range of sports, including soccer, hockey, athletics, rugby, netball, cricket, golf, basketball, tennis and table tennis.
