Background:
Opened in 1934, the school is situated in the village of Bramley Vale, an area of 'high social deprivation', and is adjacent to the Hardwick estate, a national trust property. The five classrooms, nursery, mother-and-toddler room, offices, computer suite, baby clinic, hall, and library are all housed in a 'Swiss-style' building which also has a 'large' playground and playing field. The school, which is not over-subscribed, has won millennium awards for raising literacy levels and for creating a 'story sacks library' as well as an award for healthy living. It is 'very much a community school.' Parents work voluntarily in the school and take up the adult courses that are on offer. A governor and a teacher are responsible for co-ordinating responses to when a child is identified with special educational needs (SEN). Lunchtime and after-school activities include drama classes, story club, recorder class and netball, football and hockey lessons and matches. The school has also been involved in raising money for charity.
