Background:

Originally built in 1788, the school was extended in 1971 and again in 1999. Set in the heart of Great Longstone above the village green, it is surrounded by its own grounds and is next door to the village's recreation area. It boasts a large playground, sports field, pond, conservation area and wood. Facilities include four main classrooms, two of which have adjoining conservatories, a central library, music practice room and multi-purpose hall. The school recently set up a large computer centre, which is run by a specialist IT tutor. Other specialist tutors cover class teaching of music, science, drama, dance and gymnastics. Music is a 'particular strength' with tuition available in piano, classical guitar, drums, violin, brass and woodwind. There is a school orchestra, string quartet, recorder ensemble and choir. Other activities include French, sewing, pottery and sports like football, cricket, netball and tennis. The school is slightly over-subscribed. Everyone involved with Longstone school works to create a friendly, caring and open atmosphere. The staff work hard and have a strong sense of duty and responsibility. The school does its utmost to enable the children to achieve the highest possible academic standards and provides a great diversity of challenge and experiences through specialist teaching and an outstanding range of extra-curricular activities.
