Background:
Melbourne Junior School was built in 1971 on a campus which it shares with an infant school and youth centre. Its main building has eight classrooms arranged around a hall and library. The school'serves the town of Melbourne and a number of other villages on the outskirts of Derby. Each year the school devotes a week during the summer term to art, music, physical and health education or drama. It was recently awarded a Health Promoting Schools award and a Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark. The school has links with the community. Senior citizens have a weekly lunchtime club in the school and, in addition to links with local churches, the school has the support of an active parents association.
