Background:
The school was founded in 1839 and has been on it present site since 1876, although the building was extended in 1966 when the population in the village increased. It is situated in a semi-rural community on the edge of the Peak District, close to Chatsworth Park. The environment features highly in the curriculum and the school finds that the children are 'eager' to take an active role in caring for the school garden and the grounds. In addition to all aspects of the curriculum, pupils benefit from many extra-curricular activities such as netball, football and the gardening club and in 1999 the school was declared champions in the local schools netball tournament. Pupils in years 4, 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to take part in the school's annual outdoor pursuit visit to a PGL Centre where they can enjoy pursuits such as sailing, windsurfing and canoing. It has also been presented with a Health Promoting Schools Award for a special project to promote healthy eating for primary aged children. Music is a strong subject and, in addition to the recorder, the school has a brass band which takes part in local music festivals. The school is also proud of its dramatic productions which involve all pupils, and it believes these help to build confidence. St Anne's, which has the motto 'Working Towards Excellence', supports local charities and every year it raises several hundered pounds for Readathon during Book Week in October.
