Background:

There has been a primary school in Weston Underwood, six miles north west of Derby, since 1840, and the current school serves the village and some areas further afield. The small size of Mugginton Primary meant it was threatened with closure several years ago, but the local community fought successfully to keep it open. The 'well-resourced' school has three computers for teaching technology, while 'dedicated' staff teach a 'varied, balanced and exciting' curriculum, including French, to small classes in which children gain 'a high level of personal attention'. Support staff are available to assist children with special educational needs. In recent years, pupils have taken part in residential visits to North Wales and Somerset, reinforcing the school's philosophy of 'outward looking' education. Pupils can learn an instrument and art, games and computer clubs take place after school. Pupils participate in 'many and varied' local sports activities, through 'strong' links with neighbouring schools, and all children swim once a week. The school is the 'focal point' of the community, with regular social events held at the school. Parents are 'active' in the school's daily life and are always welcome to assist in the classroom.
