Background:

Risley village's long history of education dates back to 1583 when the first school was founded by the Lord and Lady of Risley Manor. The present school building dates from 1753 when it was known as the English School; it became the Risley Lower Grammar CE Primary School in 1896 and was housed in the present main school building. This has been altered internally over the years and following a refurbishment in 2002, now contains the school library (used at present as a classroom for Year 6 pupils) and a reasonable-sized infant classroom. The English school, a Grade 2 listed building was extended, also in 2002 to provide a resource area, inside toilets, a stock room and a further Key Stage 1 classroom. Two further classrooms, housing KS2, are situated adjacent to English School. The school office, located in a portacabin, is situated beyond the terrapin classrooms. Numerous alterations have since been made - currently the main building houses two infant classes, a small cloakroom and kitchen area that serves as a staff resource area. Two further classrooms, housing the junior department, are situated across the playground but the school library is due to be relocated from there to the main building. Risley's Latin School, built in 1732, is used as an assembly hall and music room. The school has a large playing field and a nature reserve. The schools aims are to ensure that each child achieves their academic potential; feels safe and happy; makes a positive contribution to the life of the school and the community; has the confidence to face challenges in life; appreciates the need for a healthy lifestyle; experiences spirituality in the world around them.
